Do your images sell your products?

Many OSC stores aren't set up to display images very well. Each product has one image and they are squashed when they need to show a smaller image and stretched and fuzzy when they want to display an enlarged image.

Is it obvious that the image on the right is more likely to sell the product than the one on the left? Click "No" if you want to do something about it.

When you use a large image and make it smaller with the browser shrinking it, the quality goes down. Make separate images for display on the product listing page and the product details page and a bigger image for a magnified view. At the same time make sure the filename is relevant. That all takes time when you've got hundreds or thousands of products to do, so make it easy and get automation help.

Do you appear high up in the search engine rankings?

Think about one of your best selling or most profitable products and think what you'd type into a search engine if you wanted to buy one of these yourself. If your site comes on the first page, you're doing well. If it's a very popular product you'll have more difficulty getting onto the first page than if you're selling a niche product. Think about other words and see where you come.

Then try the same thing again on Google and click the "Shopping" link. Do your products show up when you enter the barcode or SKU or model number of the product?

Google Base is the system Google has to allow website owners to tell Google what products they sell. You can set it up so that Google look every day what your latest prices are too, but communicating the information is a little tricky so get expert help doing it.

Some sites are really easy to complete the checkout. Others not so much. How many times do your customers have to load a new page before they complete their payment? If it's a lot, there's more opportunity for a customer to get fed up and go elsewhere.

Google introduced the requirement (Sep 2011) to include information about availability of your products in your google base data feed, so if you've not made modifications to allow for that, you'll be getting messages in your Google Base control panel telling you your products are imported but not searchable.
