Drupal Support › Moving many sites

Moving many Drupal 7 and 8 sites at once

If your team runs tens or hundreds of department, research and event sites on old Drupal, you can move them to Drupal 11 in batches, at a fixed price per site. Each site keeps its content, page addresses and look. You pay nothing until you approve each batch.

Support dates

Ended 2 November 2021

Drupal 8

No security updates for nearly five years.

Ended 5 January 2025

Drupal 7

No security updates from the Drupal project.

Ends 9 December 2026

Drupal 10

Sites on Drupal 10 also need to move to Drupal 11.

What you get

The same look

Each site looks and works as it does now. Every page is checked against the original before you see it.

The same page addresses

Existing URLs keep working, so links from other sites, search results and printed material still land on the right page.

All the content

Pages, news, events, people, images, documents and editor accounts come across.

A fixed price per site

Confirmed in writing before work starts. No hourly billing.

Your platform

Work to your own theme, coding standards and hosting: Pantheon, Acquia or your own servers.

Pay on approval

You review each batch on a test address. You pay for a batch only after you sign it off.

How a batch works

  1. Free review of 3 sites. You choose 3 typical sites. You get a written note on what each one needs.
  2. Fixed price per site. You get the price in writing, before any work starts.
  3. Sites move in batches. Each batch goes to your team for review on a test address.
  4. Sign-off, then go-live. A site goes live only after you sign it off.
  5. Handover. The sites go to your team, or I host and support them if you prefer.

Prices

For batches of 20 or more: from £400 + VAT per site for Drupal 7 (US $600), and from £250 + VAT per site for Drupal 8 (US $375). Sites that share a theme and a set of modules cost less per site than one-off work, because that shared work is done once.

The exact price per site is quoted after the free review of 3 sites. Accessibility fixes, redesigns and new features are quoted separately.

Accessibility

Many Drupal 7 themes fail WCAG 2.2 AA, which UK public sector bodies must meet under the accessibility regulations. You can have the theme fixed as part of the move, quoted separately, so each site goes live once rather than twice.

Who does the work

Brian Willows of Graith Internet, a web developer since 1997 (Perl, then PHP), running Graith since 2000 and a contributor on drupal.org, based in the Forest of Dean, UK. I work alongside your team, to your conventions, and report to one contact you choose. Professional indemnity insurance is in place.

Questions web teams ask

How do you check that a site looks and works the same?

Each page of the new site is checked against the original, for layout and for missing text, before your team sees it. You then review the batch on a test address and report anything that differs.

What happens to page addresses and redirects?

Existing URLs and redirects carry over. Every known address on the old site is checked on the new one before go-live.

Our sites share a theme and modules. How does that change the price?

The shared theme and modules are moved once and reused for every site, so the price per site falls. The free review of 3 sites shows how much is shared.

Some sites have custom modules. Can they still have a fixed price?

Yes. Custom code is found in the review and priced in writing before work starts. A site that needs more work than the rest gets its own price.

How does procurement work?

Each batch is a fixed-price piece of work with a written scope, so it fits a purchase order. Insurance certificates and the usual supplier forms are available on request.

Can departments pay for their own sites?

Yes. The price is per site, so each department can have its own quote and invoice, under terms agreed with your central team.

How do we get in touch?

By email, at sales@graith.co.uk. Everything is agreed in writing, so you have a record of the scope, the prices and each sign-off.
